Now taking suggestions
Posted on | 8 months, 1 week ago, around lunchtime | 27 Comments
So – first of all, I am totally not dead yet. I am in California, which is much nicer than being dead; and I will be here through tomorrow evening, hanging around the office and being productive – thus my lack of posting, for which I do apologize.
But I’m posting now! Actually, I am posting now to ask for a bit of assistance from you, the internet.
It’s like this: My publicist at Tor has broached the possibility of a book tour for Ganymede – which comes out in September. I, for one, am happy to travel around signing books and trying to convince people to buy them, so I am pretty keen on this idea. This having been said, I’m not in a position to handle the sheer density of travel I’ve managed for the last 2 years – not least of all because of the aforementioned California job, and because my husband has nearly forgotten what I look like.
Therefore, this will have to remain somewhat low-key. It will not be a twenty-stop parade of cities. And in short, I am taking suggestions.
If you would like to suggest a stop on the Clockwork Century’s Rockin’ Steampunk Extravaganza*, I would like to hear from you – but first, a couple of notes:
- The best possible method of getting me to visit: Have someone from your favorite bookstore drop me an email via – cherie.priest@gmail.com – at which point I’ll put that someone in touch with my publicist and we’ll see what we can work out.
- I try to prioritize independent neighborhood stores above chains, but if there is no such store present or available … then I’m happy to work with the bigger guys. Many fine, upstanding, book-loving and author-supporting people work at the chains, and I salute every last one of them. I just prefer to support the locals when possible.
- Alas, please limit suggestions to the continental USA.
Although all suggestions will be considered, budgets are limited and the space-time continuum prevents me from being everywhere at once. Priority will be given to regions I have not yet visited, but that’s not to say I won’t be happy to come hang at old stomping grounds.
My only major request of the moment – I would very much like to do an event in New Orleans, as that’s where Ganymede is primarily set;* so if you have bookstore connections down in the Big Easy and you’d like to either (a). make a recommendation, or (b). preferably have someone who works at your recommended venue drop me a note, I would be forever grateful.
And…that’s pretty much it. Hit me with your ideas! Comment or email, and I’ll start forwarding things along to the appropriate authorities. But for now, lunchtime is almost over and I have to get back to work.
Thanks for reading!
* God, that’s awful. I’ll have to think of something better before the book actually launches.
** I did my first Boneshaker events in Seattle; I did a big Richmond event for Dreadnought; and it only seems fitting to hit up Louisiana while I’m on a roll.

Putting a vote in for my Friendly local book store, the famous Uncle Hugo’s in Minneapolis!

I don’t really have a connection with them or I’d totally ask them to talk to your publicist (and maybe they already have?), but: Books & Co. is a really excellent locally owned bookstore with two locations in the Dayton, OH area. It’s definitely the best venue for signings in this area. Keeping my fingers crossed!

I was actually going to write a comment asking you to come to New Orleans before I read the end of your post. I sent an email off to Octavia Books, which is probably the biggest, shiniest indie bookstore we have in NOLA.

Also, if you time your visit right, there is a yearly giant White Wolf gala/ con/ gaming weekend in September. It’s very posh.

I’m going to second Minneapolis!

Off the Beaten Path Books, Farmington, MI. Here’s the link: Welcome to the only 19th Century Steampunk themed Bookstore in Michigan that specializes in speculative fiction! http://www.otbp-bookstore.com

I know you’re coming to the area next June for ConTemporal, but Raleigh-Durham would be a great stop on either the Southern backswing or upswing to/from New Orleans through Atlanta and/or DC. Just saying. Hopefully you’ll hear from the local bookstores soon.

Anywhere in Southwest Virginia or Southern West Virginia. I will explode!!!!!!
June 15th, 2011 @ 1:34 pm
Left Bank Books, Saint Louis! We have a great Steampunk Community, our City Museum is a labyrinthine playground that’s 2 parts carnival oddities and 1 part actual museum. And if you time it right, the Beggar’s Carnival is a monthly circus-burlesque extravaganza so lots of fun to be had in passing if you visit. :D

Schulers books, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Would be all kinds of awesome. I’ll try to get the rep to contact you.
June 15th, 2011 @ 1:43 pm
Flights of Fantasy in Albany! (Selfishly, I can drive 30 minutes and see you. Unselfishly, it’s a cute store with cute store cats.)
June 15th, 2011 @ 1:43 pm
We’d love for you to return to Houston and Murder by the Book.
June 15th, 2011 @ 2:21 pm
I second Schuler’s in Lansing & Grand Rapids. Awesome stores, excellent in all ways!
June 15th, 2011 @ 3:06 pm
Come to Huntsville, AL! We don’t get any authors down here, so that would be, like, the awesomest. Seriously. I don’t really know of any indie stores here, but I do know some cool people at the Barnes and Noble. I’ll see what I can do. :3

The owner of Uncle Hugo’s (Minneapolis, MN) is in my gaming group, and is my beloved Gun Toting Orthodox Israelite. I totally, as an Uncle Hugo/Edgar’s fan and friend of the family, totally reccomend it.
June 15th, 2011 @ 3:21 pm
I sent an e-mail to the owners of the Broadway Book Mall here in Denver, CO. It’s a great store, and Denver is a wonderful place to visit.
June 15th, 2011 @ 3:39 pm
Changing Hands in Tempe or Poison Pen in Scottsdale. I will buy you a drink and if he is nice to us we can invite Sam. Seriously though, you have to come back to AZ.

I would throw out my local hole-in-the-wall used book place but they don’t have events, they’re that tiny. Also it’s used.
So I’ll throw out Barnes and Noble (I know it’s a chain…) in Evanston, IL because I work there! Pretty pretty please! I know our manager is a fan, so I’ll chat him up about it later.

I totally have no connection with them, but if you’re interested in Kansas City, Prospero’s is a really funky (in a very good way!) indie book store. http://www.prosperosbookstore.com Primarily a used book store, they do carry some new books and have regular readings and signings. Aside from that, the B&N’s in the area are very nice, and we also have two Half-Price books (one on the MO side, one on the KS side. Mixture of both new and used, and IMO one of the better chains). http://www.hpb.com/

Oh!!! I almost forgot RainyDay Books! http://www.rainydaybooks.com *is shamed*
June 15th, 2011 @ 6:04 pm
Philadelphia. Pretty please with sugar on top. I don’t know of any big indie bookstores because I live in the burbs, but I know Lisa Scottoline gets a lot of cooperation from the Barnes and Noble in Devon (I think it’s Devon anyway it’s off Valley Forge Road) when she does signings. I guess I need to contact them and have them get back to you. I know I’m blathering, but please come.

I’d suggest Nashville, but we have no more bookstores.
Now, if you wanted to see if we could great creative….
Or you can wait til Ann Patchett opens her new place, or we can all drive to Franklin or Murfreesboro.
But there’d be awesomeness in it for you! (via me, Matt, B, Mike and Janet)
