Here’s today’s progress on my Hunley version 4.0 submarine book about Andan Cly and his crew having a damp misadventure in a Texian-occupied New Orleans, plus Bonus! guerrilla warfare, other assorted historic pirates, and an octoroon madam who moonlights as a Union spy.

Project: Ganymede
Deadline: November 1, 2010
New words written: 2152 (not good)
Present total word count: 23,621 words

Things accomplished in fiction: Went to the underground in order to scare up missing crew members, visit with our favorite widow, find out what the hell her son has gotten himself into this time; visited with folks from the previous books, including Dreadnought.

Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work; grocery run; straightened house; visited Noah and picked up awesome earrings (see previous post); made an unpleasant phone call; did some freaking out; resolved to chill and consider options before going thermonuclear; vowed never to send any child or other dependent of mine to any form of private christian school so help me God; paid some bills; learned that Dreadnought earned a starred PW review (!!!); and that Boneshaker is on the cover of a teen book club publication from Scholastic. Yes, it was a very up-and-down kind of day.

Other: Today’s word count is not particularly high – and does not meet my 3K a day (6 days a week) goal. But in my defense, (a). I am planning to get more work done after supper, and (b). it is almost 90 degrees in here with all the fans running and all appropriate measures taken … and believe it or not, the heat from my laptop is the straw that breaks the camel’s back and I just can’t deal with it anymore. So I’m taking a break.

Total Official Word Count of 2010: 152,232 words

  1. Mary Kay

You know, the Capitol Hill Seattle blog has a list of air-conditioned bars. All things considered, I think it’s an option to consider seriously. If you need a drinking buddy…

  2. Ha! Thank you ma’am, and I’ll keep it in mind :)

  3. I finally got to reading Boneshaker (it was a christmas gift) and it was terrific. Thanks for the really fun read. I put up a review on my blog and ordered Clementine and pre-ordered Dreadnought.

My daughter (13) is diving into Boneshaker next.

I admire your public posting of your word count. Very brave. Your daily goal is way higher than mine (500 words of fiction) and I seem to get sidetracked even with that small goal. I think I am at about 45,000 for the year, so far. I guess I will have to do NaNoWriMo again this year to catch up.

  4. Hey Pete – thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed it, and I hope your daughter does too.
