Today it’s my cousin Ryan’s birthday. Happy birthday, Ryan! I got you … [drumroll, please] … draft zero on a wacky urban fantasy adventure — this time with my neurotic undead thief, her shady agent, a cigar box full of magical penis bones, a mentally ill former NASA engineer-turned-sorceress, and the continued fabulosity of a Cuban drag queen!
Project: Hellbent
Deadline: August 9, 2010
New words written: 5803 (THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT)
Present total word count: 102,397 words
Things accomplished in fiction: THE END. For now.
Things accomplished in real life: Day-job work; writer business/emails/phone call; lunch; laundry; absolutely nothing else because it took me until almost seven at night to write 5800 words, thank you very much.
Other: I’ll probably prune this down a bit for a Draft One, but I predict that with editorial input, it’ll likely flesh out again. All things being equal, I’m pretty happy with the draft. Its leaks are minor and (it is to be hoped) easily plugged, and it’s even a good length.
Other, redux: Now I’m going to set this sucker aside until August 1st, at which point I will assault it with my epic red pen of revision. Or Microsoft Word, you know. Whatever.
Other III: [:: collapses ::]
Total Official Word Count of 2010: 126,024 words

Is that 5000 plus word count just one chapter? Or did you manage to write more than one chapter in a day?

Oh alright. Because I’m just lazy, but the longest word count for one chapter I’ve written was about 4000 plus words. I never seem to be able to complete two chapters in one day. I always find it disturbing to think I’m depriving myself of things like eating and going outside. It’s too easy to hole up in a room and just write. Dangerously easy.
