  • I logged on this morning to find a note from the Seattle Humane Society (re: a post I made pimping their Free Cats! drive), informing me that December was their second-best adoption month ever. They placed 534 animals, including 281 adult cats, which is absolutely wonderful! But there are still many more animals who need good homes; so if you’re thinking about expanding your family in a furry, four-footed way, then jaunt on down to the Seattle Humane Society and scritch a few ears.

  • I just got back from visiting our new apartment, picking up keys, dropping off rent, etcetera — and I return to you with pictures! A few disclaimers: (1). No, I won’t post shots of the building’s exterior, because I don’t care if the whole world knows what neighborhood I live in — but I’m not going to pin it down any closer than that, (2). the unit is in the process of being painted and cleaned, and will be fully spiffy by the time we occupy it in another week or two. So if you’re curious, click the jump and behold …

The building was built in the 19-teens and has much of its original hardware, though it’s been retrofitted with a new boiler and new plumbing, plus a new roof and the like. The interior doors all have cute old glass knobs; the ancient painted radiators are in place, and the bathroom is to die for if you dig retro fixtures. There are three closets, two of which are walk-ins (plus basement on-site storage, laundry, etc.), and there’s a balconette outside the kitchen window. w00t!

Don’t mind the maintenance man …

The kitchen was remodeled in the 1940s, so it has groovy old hardcore steel fixtures and real tile.

The (modern, gas) stove had been pulled out into the kitchen for cleaning and maintenance, but it’s lovely and it’s surrounded by shelves in the corner.

Anyway, now I have many errands to run, including a trip to the post office to get mail-forwarding paperwork, and to the bank to cash in a bunch of change I rolled last night while I was watching TV, as well as a visit to the used bookstore to sell some books for which I have no further use. So I’ll be offline for the better part of the rest of the day, folks. But I’ll catch you on the flip-side. :)

Looks lovely! The (what appears to be) claw-footed bathtub is to die for! You, Aric and Spainy should have many happy times there!

You’re moving into an apartment that is so similar looking to mine! Differences – no pink tiles in the bathroom, but the set up is alike. No balcony – that alone is wonderful!! Lovely radiators and hardwood floors!

Is Ms. Spain looking forward to the move?

Also congratulations on the new job!

Thanks magicwoman! And I suspect that the kitty will be quite pleased by the radiators — and by the fact that she’ll have more room to play around :)

It’s quite lovely. In fact, it literally looks like an apartment ripped out of my own building, though from what you’ve said of your new landlords it should be kept in far better shape than most of the units here. (Mine, thankfully, was newly renovated before moving in, though most of the fixtures are still practically prehistoric.)

Hopefully those tiny radiators will be enough to keep you warm and toasty!

While I love my 1930s house, I’m jealous. Especially of the size of that bathtub and of having a maintenance man. We own our house, and let me tell you, the landlords are lazy sods who take forever to fix anything!

Wow, this looks a lot like our old apartment back in Pittsburgh, except that your kitchen is happier than ours, which had clearly been remodeled in the ’70s with puke-green appliances. Happy moving!
