1. It has been brought to my attention that Subterranean Press is doing a limited edition of the delightful YA novel, Interworld (released last year by Neil Gaiman and Michael Reaves). As you may have heard, Michael is having some serious health problems related to Parkinson’s. He’s recently had one surgery and is slated for a second. All of the profits from this edition of Interworld will go to Michael to help him with his medical and daily living expenses. The book looks like this. To order it, click here.

2. The Marvelous Mr. Scalzi has written a wonderful post about the etiquette of meeting and greeting authors. I agree with him wholeheartedly, and I love meeting new people at events. The vast majority of readers who attend these things are fine, upstanding citizens whose introduction I am tickled pink to make. I have eventually become friends with more than a few of the people I’ve met this way. This having been said, I very much approve of his guidelines for boundary-setting. [Note: This post (mine) edited for the sake of clarity.]

3. Coming up next week … a book release party in Olympia! Not one of mine, no. But three exceptional members of Team Seattle shall be in top form at Artisan’s. Click the bold link for details.

4. Since I got emails in the wake of yesterday’s kitty pictures, yes — Howard the Fish is fine. In fact, he’s created a truly magnificent bubble nest. Hey, check it out. A LOLfeesh.

5. Today’s progress on the west coast steampunk Victoriana book with zombies, air ships, toxic gas clouds, mad scientists, dead folk heroes, secret criminal societies, and Bonus! extended deleted scenes from the Civil War:

Project: The Boneshaker
Resolution revised: Still writing every day, as planned.
New Words: 1080 (meh.)
Present Total Word Count: 58,503 words
Goal: 100,000 words by July 1

Things Accomplished in Fiction: Removed some of Lucy’s back story (it was running long and rambly); finished the full tale; got Briar through the night; she’s even found the breakfast bar and the bathrooms, so she ought to be okay for the next chapter or two, right? Right? (Mwoo hah hah hah …)

Excerpt du Jour: “Lucy sealed off another yawn with a low, satisfied note like the warning whistle of a tea kettle.”

Things Accomplished in Real Life: Devoted most of the day to revising/cleaning/finishing up the 4-part freelance assignment. It’s not due until tomorrow, but there’s some question about whether or not the content will need a new direction, so I wanted to get it in early; this way we can always fine-tune it tomorrow if it requires work. I only allowed myself one hour for writing on Boneshaker, thus the low word count.

Reason for Stopping: Now that I’m “finished” with the freelance assignment and I’ve met my personal fiction quota*, I need to devote the rest of the afternoon to copy edits. I really want to drop them back into the mail tomorrow.

Total Fiction Words Composed in 2008: 127,103

* Bare minimum, 1000 words a day.

  1. Green Tee Readings » On Meeting People and Making Friends Says:

    […] First, for his Reader Request Week, Scalzi says smart thing about meeting famous people, after which Wil Wheaton said What Scalzi Said, and then I saw a link to Cherie Priest saying some folks honestly believe that they are best-friends-and-practically-family with people they met j…. […]

  2. Cynthia K. Dalton Says:

    Where have you heard a tea kettle with a low, satisfied note? Every tea kettle I have ever heard was high pitched and rather shrill.

  3. Cherie Says:

    [:: shrug ::]

    Well, mine’s nice and low. Right before it goes up to full blast it sounds like a big train, or a low kazoo.
